Shri Adinath
Bhagvan Temple
Jainism
has 24 Tirthankaras (Gods). First amongst them is Bhagvan Adinath,
also known as Rishabdev.
The temple dedicated to
him in the Mehrauli Dadabari complex is famous for it’s excellence
glasswork and the murals on its pillar. The 24 Jain Tirthankaras have been
depicted in the murals made of the mirrors and colored glass on the dome.
One of the sidewalls has
a painting of the 23rd god –Neminath Bhagvan, who renounced the world when
his marriage procession was on it's way to the ceremony grounds.
As
the story goes, on his wedding day Neminath and his brother Lord Krishna,
riding on separate chariots, were proceeding towards the marriage hall.
Accompanying the procession were kings, army chiefs, armies as well as the
groom's relatives. On the way there, Naminathji saw a number of animals
and birds confined in a shack for the supper. Their cries made his heart
bleed. He enquired from the chariot driver the reason for their cries.
When the truth was revealed to him, he wonders if all those birds and
animals should be slaughtered only for his marriage. He dismounted from
the chariot, gave express orders to release the animals and birds and also
decided to free himself from worldly attachments.
On
the other side, when his fiancée Rajul came to know of his decision, she
too wanted to follow the suit. At that very time, Neminath’s brother
Rahnemi proposed to marry her in Neminath's place. The refusal also came
immediately, accompanied by the remark that how could he accept his
brother’s left overs. Rajul remained adamant and abandoned the world to
follow Lord Neminath to the Girnar Parvat (Juna Garh Hills) in Gujrat.
In the same temple,
Bhagvan Mahvirji’s life is depicted from his birth to eternity in the form
of murals and mirror work. |
